Electoral Commission rejects problems on council election day

The Queensland Electoral Commission has downplayed problems experienced by voters at polling centres in our region on the weekend.

Candidates, volunteers and voters have expressed concerns about the inadequacy of the voting process on Saturday.

There are reports of booths running out of ballot papers including at Sienna College and Peregian.

Many voters complained about long queues to vote and polling centres being understaffed.

However, the Electoral Commission says queues are not uncommon and in many areas the wait time was very short.

ECQ is comfortable with staffing levels and says where ballot papers were depleted in a very small number of locations they were quickly replenished by Returning Officers.

It says everyone who turned up before 6pm was able to cast a vote.
