Some Bushfire-Affected Residents Returning Home

Emergency services have advised, due to the continuing declared disaster situation and unpredictable fire threat, some residents within the shire will not be able to return to their homes on Saturday.

This includes residents who have been evacuated from Noosa Banks, Noosa North Shore and parts of Cooroibah and parts of Ringtail Creek.

Residents of Tewantin outside of the exclusion zone are now permitted to return to their homes. This includes Old Tewantin, Parklands and Daintree Estate.

All relevant road blocks will remain in place. McKinnon Drive is still closed north of Yellowood Close to Louis Bazzo Dr.

Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said "I am very pleased to announce that residents from Tewantin can now return home. So all those people who have been evacuated from Old Tewantin, Parklands and Daintree Estate can now return to their homes".

"There are still fires burning north of Tewantin with southerly winds and that mean areas including Noosa Banks, Noosa North Shore and Cooroibah remain evacuated.

"The residents form those areas who have been evacuated will not be able to return until at least tomorrow [Sunday].

"However all the resident who have been evacuated from Tewantin can return home.

"Please obey any instructions given by the Police and SES there is going to be an awful lot of people all rushing to get home at once so try to be polite on the roads and make sure you obey instructions" Mayor Wellington said.

He said  there are still a number of spot fires in the Cooroibah area and the winds keep shifting which makes it very difficult, adding they are still using aerial assaults including helicopters etc. to bombard those spot fires.

Mayor Wellington said "There is still something of a front in the Cooroibah area heading towards Louis Bazzo Drive but that is not threatening houses immediately however there are houses in that area which is why that area has been evacuated".

He said the "Noosa Leisure Centre will still take people but of course as evacuee return to Tewantin that will free up space at all of our evacuation centres".

"The centre currently open include the J at Noosa Junction, The leisure centre at Wallace Park, Cooroy library in Cooroy and the Christian Outreach Centre at Noosaville. All of those evacuation centres remain open at the moment.

In terms of how the evacuees are coping he said "I think people are in very good spirits really considering I’m sure they will be really glad to get to their comfy beds tonight".

Evacuation centres remain open for those who still cannot return home at this time. These evacuation centres include:

- The J Noosa, 60 Noosa Dr

- Cooroy Library, 9 Maple St

- Noosa Christian Outreach Church, 202 Eumundi Rd

- Noosa Leisure Centre, Wallace Dr
