Bribie Island Bushfire Raging Out Of Control - Campers Evacuated

UPDATE | Crews continue to assist Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) and HQPlantations at a bushfire smouldering within containment lines at the northern end of Bribie Island.

Crews are currently mopping up and patrolling the edges of this fire, which is posing no threat to property at this time.

Crews are monitoring a fire in Middle Swamp which is inaccessible and may produce smoke intermittently.

Bribie Island residents may be affected by a smoke haze throughout the day.

Residents are asked to close windows and doors and if suffering from a respiratory condition, keep their medications close by.

Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions. If residents are concerned their property is under threat they are advised to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

EARLIER | The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is continuing to work with QFES and HQ Plantations to contain a fire in the northern section of Bribie Island.

Rangers said unfortunataly the bushfires have claimed the lives of some native animals. 

A Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson said the fire is currently burning down the narrow coastal strip between the beach and the Eastern Boundary Track.

Heavy machinery are working to construct fire lines in the area ahead of a predicted wind change expected tonight.

Firefighting helicopters have been dumping water on the fire front throughout the day.

There is no threat to property or infrastructure.

The cause of the fire will be investigated once it has been contained.

QPWS were not conducting planned burn activities when the blaze sparked.

Crews are building and strengthening containment lines on the eastern side of the island in an effort to contain the fire.

Residents in surrounding locations may be affected by a smoke haze throughout the day.

"The cause of the fire will be investigated once it has been contained.

EARLIER | A fire on Bribie Island, which began as a planned burn ten days ago, is now raging out of control.  

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service crews began carrying out controlled burns to reduce the risk during the current bushfire season.

A Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesperson said, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service crews are working with HQ Plantations to contain a fire burning in national park and plantation forests at Top Swamp in the northern part of Bribie Island.  

The fire is heading east, and at this stage is not near townships or threatening infrastructure.

As a precaution, Queensland Police Service has moved on campers from ocean beach camping in the Bribie Island Recreation Area.

Crews are building a fire break, and a helicopter will be used for support if required.

QPWS said it will investigate the cause of the fire.
