Five players have already committed to the Sunshine Coast Lightning ahead of the 2020 season.

Locking in a core contingent of five players before season’s end is a positive result for the Club, in what is just the first wave of player re-signings.

Lightning’s attack will go from strength to strength with Steph Wood, Laura Scherian, Cara Koenen and Peace Proscovia confirmed, alongside goalkeeper Annika Lee-Jones.

Head Coach Noeline Taurua said the Club was buoyant about the five signings and looks forward to seeing the combinations continue to develop and gel.

“Five players re-committing to Lightning next season is exciting for the Club and bodes well for our vision going forward,” Taurua said.

“Having this group of high calibre individuals locked in is a strong endorsement of our program and the culture that we have worked hard to establish these past three years.

“The strength of our shooting unit this year has been our ability to have a moving circle, a stationery holder or a tall circle - that versatility has been a great weapon for our team so far.

“The unique combinations we have on court have resulted in a combined shooting efficiency of 90% and we look forward to consolidating the unit further.

“Retaining three foundation players so far in Wood, Scherian and Koenen is also a real boost to the team and its core values.

"Watching the growth of Cara as a player in 2019 highlights Lightning’s philosophy of allowing players time to learn, develop and mature in a high performance environment, and we believe Annika will also benefit from the opportunity to build on her understanding of the Lightning style of play in her second year at the Club."

After playing at centre in Lightning’s back-to-back Premiership years, Scherian has relished the challenge to shift forward into wing attack and has put on a dominant display in the new position.

Leading the competition in centre pass receives, she has been performing consistently week in, week out against some of the league’s best defenders, delivering quality ball to Lightning’s shooters.

In the goal circle, Wood and Koenen have formed a strong and versatile combination with the Ugandan national Captain, Proscovia, who has demanded opposition attention in her inaugural season of Suncorp Super Netball.

Wood’s class and smarts have been complimented by her on court leadership this season for Lightning, while she was also influential in the Australian Diamonds Netball World Cup campaign.

Meanwhile, Koenen has seen a breakout season, forcing her way into the starting seven on multiple occasions and providing a complementary point of difference, whether working alongside Wood or Proscovia.

At the opposite end of the court, Lee-Jones has flourished within the high performance program at Lightning, honing her defensive craft after two seasons with West Coast Fever.

Further Lightning re-signing announcements are expected shortly, as the Suncorp Super Netball contract signing period continues.

Laura Scherian and Annika Lee-Jones will be available to speak to media on Thursday 14 August 2019 at USC Stadium at 9:20am.
