The Kawana Chamber of Commerce has responded to recent claims that businesses are not thriving in Birtinya.

It comes after Raw Energy, located opposite the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, closed its doors. Then the owners of the Coffee Club, right next door, went public with claims that they had barely any customers.

President Paul Anderson said "I understand where the Coffee Club is coming from, they serve coffee in the Hospital as well, so they've got a bit of competition there, but at the same time, I think businesses around there are flourishing as well".

Specifically he mentioned, Best Western, "and others that are going extremely well".

So, he said, it has a lot to do with what people are visiting Birtinya for. He feels like there is a huge amount of potential for businesses to thrive their in future.

We have also noticed while visiting Stockland Birtinya Shopping Centre, which houses Coles and Aldi, that it is generally very quiet.

Mr Anderson said Birtinya "is an emerging part of the coast, and there is a lot happening". He mentioned the Sports Hub, the Hospital and the Bokarina Beach development.

He said "people are coming because of those developments".

Mr Anderson also said that previously, people have only known about Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa and many are yet to discover Birtinya, located within the greater Kawana area.

He said it is the conduit between Caloundra and Maroochydore and word is spreading.

He said businesses only get one chance to make an impression so they need to make it count.

The regular Sunday markets and Twilight Markets have attracted a lot of interest in Caloundra. Mr Anderson said they did try to hold a Farmers Market near the Kawana Waters School but it wasn't a huge success. He did however say that they would be willing to give that another go based on growth in the area.

Mr Anderson said the other thing is, Birtinya has a presence on the Kawana Chamber of Commerce's Facebook page.
