UPDATE | Police have provided an update on their investigation into a stabbing in Gympie.

Acting Inspector Gregg Davey Gympie Patrol Group said "Police responded to and are now investigating an incident at a Rifle Range address where two male persons have turned up, there's been an incident at that address resulting in one of the people turning up and one of the occupants getting stab wounds".

"It would appear they've turned up... there's been an altercation during that a knife has been produced and someone has been stabbed in the back and they've got some critical injuries and the other person has stab wounds but not critical.

"I'm led to believe that one person has two stab wounds to the back but have narrowly missed his spine.

"It would appear the two persons have turned up there, those people were in balaclavas, they've knocked on the door, the door has been answered, there's been some demands that have been made and as a result of that there's been physical altercation.

"You'd have to think somewhere along the lines that these people would be associated and would have some knowledge of each other. Police are now working trying to work out the background behind that.

"The police are still conducting investigations, obviously we're trying to determine the facts surrounding it and that's gaining a version of all parties involved

"We're led to believe they fled in a vehicle as a result of the investigations by the detectives last night, we're able to identify the location of one of those persons and that's the suspect that we're talking to at the moment.

"If anyone was in the area at 11 o'clock rifle range road and had dash cams working please review it, let us know and we'll have a look at it" he said.

Acting Inspector Davey said Detectives have been talking to a person, "I personally don't know what that person has actually told the detectives but certainly they're working on it and hopefully they'll get to the bottom of it he added".

"I don't think anyone should be concerned, the circumstances that have been briefed and obviously I can't relay that at the moment because it may hinder our investigations but it would be apparent that they so know each other, it's not a random incident. So I stress to the people of Gympie don't be concerned at this stage, it's not a good thing to happen but certainly it's not random.

"We are not sure at this stage whether they were both armed or only one person, and in that altercation the male victim from the house received the stab wounds to the back and is in a critical condition and one of the offenders who fled the scene and was located by police was located with stab wounds (located at an address on the south side of Gympie).

"There were some other investigations that were completed last night which actually led to a possible identity so police attended that address and located a wounded male" he finished.
