Local Veterans Try Their Hand At Paddle Boarding

Nice day for paddleboarding

This Sunday, Bundaberg veterans and their families will take to the water for a morning of stand-up paddle boarding.

The event, organised by Mates4Mates, aims to provide an opportunity for veterans and their families who need support to connect with other local Defence families.

Mates4Mates is a not-for-profit providing support and rehabilitation services to current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members who are wounded, injured or ill, and their families.

The activity will be held for members on Sunday (December 9) from 7.30am-9am at Kellys Beach, Bargara, followed by a barbeque brunch at Christen Park.

Media are invited to attend for photo or interview opportunities

Mates4Mates South East Queensland Manager Marc Diplock said social connection played a vital role in recovery for injured or ill veterans.

“We understand that coming out of a tightly-knit social unit, veterans often experience a sense of disconnection and isolation in civilian life and a lack of community,” he said.

“Our activities provide opportunities for veterans and their families to feel connected again to people who understand them. They also help to regain a sense of belonging and understanding among peers.

“We’re proud to be able to offer additional social connection opportunities in Bundaberg.”

Currently Mates4Mates run a coffee-catch up every Friday morning for veterans looking for peer support and connection.

If locals are interested in joining Mates4Mates activities, contact 1300 4 MATES to find out more about becoming a member.

“We have Family Recovery Centres in Brisbane, Townsville and Hobart, and outreach services and activities in regional areas like Bundaberg,” Mr Diplock said.

“We offer services from psychological support to physical rehabilitation activities, adventure challenges, employment support, and social connection activities.”
