Billionaire and avid car collector Clive Palmer is hoping to build a massive car museum at his Coolum resort to showcase more than 500 vehicles to lure in tourists.

Palmer’s company Coeur De Lion Investments Pty Ltd, has submitted a development application to the Sunshine Coast Council for the Palmer Auto Museum at 157 Warran Road, Yaroomba.

The application proposes the museum will contain 543 car display bays, 80 motorcycle bays, a gift shop, lobby and special display zone.

It would have a maximum height of 8.4m above the flood hazard allowance and a total gross floor area of 20,801sq m.

The mining magnate is also proposing to redevelop the car park into a three-storey car parking facility consisting of 460 car parking spaces and 56 motorcycle parking spaces.

The proposed car park would be for use of all resort, museum and golf course guests.

The application, lodged by Adams and Sparkes, suggests relocating the driving range to precinct 5B to make way for the museum.

“This will ensure that all playing and non-playing areas of the golf course are maintained in the overall development intent for the site. The driving range relocation is not proposed as part of this application and would be subject to further application/s and approval/s,” the application reads.

The existing golf course and driving is range is protected by a covenant, which prevents the owner from making a development application over the playing areas for non-golf related purpose, without the written approval of the council.

Earlier this year, Palmer’s media team denied that the billionaire bought a car owned by Adolf Hitler, calling it “fake news”.
