Sunshine Coast, Gympie cops a drenching as residents urged to be vigilant
Roads across the Sunshine Coast have been inundated with floodwater and people in low-lying areas urged to be vigilant and stay home if possible.
The SES has activated a public sandbag pick-up point at the Trade Pavilions at the Nambour Showgrounds.
Sand and bags are available with SES members on hand to help if need be.
The pick-up point will be open until approximately 6pm today (Friday, May 13).
Sunshine Coast Council warns that given the road and weather conditions, only drive to the Nambour Showgrounds if necessary.
The BoM is advising more rain is on the way today with flash flooding and road closures possible.
Catchments likely to be affected include: Calliope River, Boyne River, Burrum and Cherwell Rivers, Noosa River, Sunshine Coast Rivers and Creeks, Pine and Caboolture Rivers, Gold Coast Rivers and Creeks
Catchments in the Flood Watch area are generally saturated from rainfall over the last few days and weeks.
Smaller creeks and tributaries may respond rapidly to further rainfall.
Current Mary River height at Gympie is 11.16m.
Kidd Bridge Gympie and Eel Creek Bridge Nahrunda are closed.
Bells, Normanby, Inglewood, Pengelly and Six Mile Bridge open.
Bruce Highway through Gympie is still open.
Queensland Police Service has confirmed two incidents where residents have been rescued from floodwaters in the Gympie region.
Further north Noosa Council says sand bags are available at these SES locations:
- Tewantin - Read Park carpark
- Boreen Point - SES Shed, Hector Street
- Cootharaba - Rural Fire Station, Davis Road
- Pomona - SES Shed, Hospital Street
- Cooroy - carpark end of Emerald Street
- Cooran - Queen street (please bring a shovel)
- Kin Kin - Rural Fire Station Main Street
The Pomona waste transfer station is closed with the weather causing delays to waste services.
Due to dangerous surfing conditions, beaches remain closed today.
