Name: Sue Ferguson

Age: 56

Current occupation: Community Nurse

Party: Australian Labor Party

Where do you live? Peregian Springs

1 Finish this sentence. Voters should elect me because ...?

I am a nurse, and I have spent my working life caring, listening and advocating for people. It is a position of great responsibility that builds trust and understanding with those I have cared for.

I have also been a small business owner and a farmer and understand the work required to deliver successful management and leadership.

I believe these qualities are crucial because after almost a decade of the LNP and the neglect, mistakes and failures under Scott Morrison I want to form part of a Labor Government that cares, shows up and delivers a better future for our community.

2 Cost of living pressures are being felt across your electorate with CPI at 5.1% and interest rates likely to continue rising. What will you do to ease those pressures?

For Sunshine Coast residents it’s becoming harder and harder to make ends meet under Scott Morrison and even before the interest rate rise, Fairfax was already facing a full-blown cost of living crisis.

Under Morrison everything is going up but people's wages. Local families can’t risk more Morrison which is why only Labor under Anthony Albanese will bring down the cost of living by delivering affordable childcare, strengthening Medicare, making it easier to see a doctor and delivering better opportunities for secure work with fair pay.

3 Many people in your electorate have been affected by the housing and rental crisis. What will you do to address this issue in your electorate in the short and long term?

Housing, homelessness, lack of rental availability and housing affordability is another issue that’s reached crisis point under Scott Morrison.

Labor has a plan for social housing, crisis housing and housing for older women and women escaping domestic violence. An Albanese Labor Government will establish the Housing Australia Future Fund which will build 30,000 social and affordable homes right across the country.

An Albanese Government will also develop and implement a National Housing and Homelessness Plan, working with the states and territories, local government, and other key stakeholders to address the severe housing crisis.

Labor’s Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme will help first home buyers get into a house sooner with a deposit of just five per cent without the need to pay Lenders Mortgage Insurance. The Government will provide a guarantee of up to 15 per cent of the value of the property purchased. Labor’s recently announced Help to Buy policy will cut mortgage costs for eligible homebuyers.

4 As the population grows in your electorate, critical infrastructure will be crucial. What vital projects will you push for in your electorate?

It is vital for Fairfax to take advantage of the upcoming Olympics and grow our region, that employment and manufacturing is local, that our infrastructure supports a growing population, that our most vulnerable are taken care of, that health is a priority, and our ageing population is cared for and safe.

We must ensure we provide opportunities for training through our fee-free TAFE places and more university places, that we celebrate and encourage new business technology and importantly, that we provide an NBN that is fast, far reaching and reliable.

5 If elected, what is the key issue you will champion in parliament?

I aim to be a champion of our community voice on all the issues above but also to be a role model for women to enter our parliament. I will be visible, accessible, and accountable to my community.

I will advocate for Fairfax as we have been ignored for far too long and it is time for our fair share and a plan for a better future.
