Moffat Beach Brewing Co cleans up at national beer comp

Sunshine Coast craft brewery Moffat Beach Brewing Co has taken home a swag of trophies at the 2021 Independent Brewers Association Awards.

The Indies, as the Awards are colloquially known, is one of the largest craft beer competitions in Australia, with more than 180 independently owned breweries submitting almost 1,400 beers for consideration.

Moffat Beach was awarded Champion Session Beer for its flagship ‘Moff’s Summer Ale’, a cult favourite among local beer lovers for its highly refreshing taste, and also Champion India Pale Ale (IPA) for its ‘Trilogy Best Coast IPA’, a hop-driven West Coast style IPA full of tropical aroma and flavour.

The  brewery also collected gold medals for Moff’s Summer Ale, Trilogy Best Coast IPA and Shadow Of The Moon Eclipse Strong Pale, a limited release beer brewed in collaboration with Hop Products Australia.

The small outfit then took the title of State Champion Brewery for Queensland, before capping the night with the Champion Small / Medium Brewery for Australia.

These beers are ‘blind tasted’ by teams of beer experts, assessed on style, taste, aroma and more, with the highest-scoring beers awarded gold medals and the best beers awarded Champion trophies.

Moffat Beach Brewing Co was founded by Matt and Sharynne Wilson in 2015.

Head brewer Matt Wilson felt humbled by the experience and the acknowledgement from peers.

“I’m starting to get embarrassed now,” he began as he accepted the Queensland State Champion trophy.

“The one thing I’d like to say is I started brewing at home by myself. I've largely used competitions as a way to educate myself and it's from getting awesome feedback from the judges who are impartial and really critical at times.”

Sharynne thanked her team, and the broader Sunshine Coast community.

“We’re so lucky to have found a home, a fantastic team, and a truly supportive community here on the Sunshine Coast. We’re also thrilled to be flying the flag for craft beer on the Coast, where more than 20 leading breweries operate between Noosa and Caloundra.

“The Sunshine Coast truly is the craft beer capital of Australia”.

The awards were presented at a virtual awards ceremony celebrated at venues all across the country on Thursday, November 25.
