Thousands treated at home, freeing up local hospital beds
A service helping to free up hospital beds for the sickest patients is celebrating a major milestone.
Hospital in the Home has now treated four thousand people from the comfort of their own homes, since it began in 2014.
Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health's Fiona Jackson says having at home treatment can also help people recover faster.
"We find that patients have shorter lengths of stay in hospital, and so they get home to their own bed, their own food, their own family and that generally makes people feel a lot better, when they're trying to get over acute and serious illnesses."
Ms Jackson says it frees up hospital beds for those who need them most.
"Emergency departments and the medical and surgical teams identify patients who are appropriate for HITH, and would like to go home and be managed at home, and that will move them out of the hospitals beds, freeing them for the patients that need to be in hospital."
The team services patients in the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie areas seven days a week, and also offers phone support 24-hours a day.
