Sunshine Coast Council is investing $250,000 to construct an additional 500 tiered seats at the stadium – bringing the total tiered seating capacity to 1,000.

Division 2 councillor and Deputy Mayor, Tim Dwyer welcomed the improvements.

“Increasing seating capacity to 1,000 will mean Caloundra Indoor Stadium is more likely to attract higher level sporting events to the precinct,” Cr O’Pray said.

Cr Dwyer said high-quality sporting facilities helped build stronger communities and this was particularly important in major growth areas like Caloundra.

“The stadium will continue to play an important role in keeping our communities healthy and active. With the development of Aura and growth across Caloundra generally, we expect numbers in all of our sporting competitions, particularly the junior ranks, to continue to grow,” Cr O’Pray said.

The improvements follow a $380,000 upgrade in August which added three outdoor netball courts to the precinct.

The Stadium will be closed from Tuesday December 10, 2019 to Thursday January 16, 2020 to allow construction of the seats and annual floor maintenance works to be carried out.

The stadium’s major sporting competitions – basketball, netball and futsal – will have finished for the year so will not be impacted by the closure.

The stadium’s pickleball program – a paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis – as well as its badminton and its junior soccer training program - Little Kickers - will finish a week earlier than originally scheduled to enable the closure.

Economic Tourism, Events and Sport Councillor Jason O’Pray said the upgrades will be finished in time for the stadium’s first major competition of 2020 – the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Tournament 2020 taking place from January 17-19.

“This is a wonderful tournament and I encourage the community to get along and cheer on competitors and check out the improved stadium at the same time,’’ Cr O’Pray said.
