Buderim Concert Band

buderimconcertband.jpg

The Buderim concert band was the result of one man’s vision, Mr Barry Rodgers, and was founded in 1998.  The first performance was at Anzac Day of that year, and the band has maintained that proud tradition, performing and marching at the Maroochydore and Mudjimba Anzac Day services in recent years, including 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the original Anzac Cove landings.  The band has gone from strength to strength, under the enthusiastic leadership of current musical director and associate musical director, Mr Clayton Fiander and Mr Damian Bowden.  The Band comprises over 30 members – a mixed bunch of professional and keen amateur players of all ages and from all walks of life.  The Band is proud to be associated with the Australia Day March at Buderim every year, and also plays for many charity and local community organisations.

The band’s repertoire includes classical and modern medleys, movie themes, light jazz, an assortment of Latin dance numbers, marches, and of course, Christmas songs and carols at the end of the year.  In 2017, we commissioned our own march by a Brisbane composer, named the Buderim Pioneers, with the first public rendition at the Anzac Day service at Cotton Tree.

The band rehearses each Monday evening (7-9pm) at the Mountain Creek State High School, and new members are always welcome.  Our band strongly believes that music is for everyone & not just those who can afford to buy an instrument. As such, we also provide free hire of instruments that have been acquired through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund etc. Music has been proven to stimulate the brain in ways that are not observable through any other activity. Music has been found to positively correlate with a strong study ethic in younger players. It helps to develop neural pathways and form muscle memory in all players and also creates a social outlet and maintain the mental agility of our older members.

We operate a very successful ‘beginner ensemble’ aimed at newer musician who want to learn to play as a team, or to give relevance to their one-on-one lessons that they may receive at school or at home. Mr Myron Cheney is the leader of that band.  The result has been astounding and this is the only such ensemble that we are aware of on the Sunshine Coast. Consider that our younger members are electing to put down their online activities such as social media platforms, apps & games to make music with fellow citizens from a variety of backgrounds in a socially positive environment. These musicians may go on to represent the community as their skill develops.
