Police investigating if arsonists started Beerwah bushfire

Police are investigating whether the major bushfire that has burned near Beerwah on the Sunshine Coast for the last two days was deliberately lit.

Footage has emerged of a group of several people in a car and on two motorbikes in the Glasshouse Mountains National Park.

A fire can be seen burning nearby and police are checking whether their “hooning” activity started the fire.

Meanwhile, residents of around 30 properties in the vicinity of Mawson’s Road and Holt Road were told to “leave immediately” on Sunday afternoon.

The fire flared again mid-afternoon yesterday and broke containment lines.

Flames could be seen burning in the canopy of the forest and several roads were closed.

Three water bombing helicopters and more than 70 fire crews fought the blaze before again containing it with backburning operations.

Authorities are considering introducing local fire bans throughout Queensland with a high fire danger expected on Thursday.
