A 15 year-old Sunshine Coast boy is due to appear in the Maroochydore Children’s Court today charged with stabbing a British backpacker in Noosa.
Police allege an argument between the teenager and 25 year-old backpacker escalated just before 4am in Hastings Street.
They said the boy left and returned with a bottle and a knife and a fight started.
The backpacker was stabbed in the back and wrist and taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) with non-life threatening injuries.
Bystanders restrained the boy until police arrived and arrested him and took him to SCUH under guard
The 15-year-old has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.
Grieving families of knife crime victims are calling for stronger restrictions on the access to and sale of knives but Inspector Jason Overland said that is the responsibility of law makers not police.
Inspector Overland said the Sunshine Coast is a safe place and people don’t need to fear for their safety.
He said he understood the bystanders restraining the teenager but urged caution when a weapon is involved.
Investigators urge anyone with information or relevant vision to contact police.
