On July 23, Taylor Swift announced that she would be releasing her eighth studio album, ‘Folklore,’ at midnight. (2 pm AEST).

The album, which was written and recorded during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic contains 16 songs and one bonus track “the lakes”, which will be available on a physical deluxe edition. She says on Twitter: “Because this is my 8th studio album, I made 8 deluxe CDs & 8 deluxe vinyls available for 1 week. Each has unique covers & photos.”

Swift said she wrote and recorded the music in isolation with a number of her “musical heroes”, including Aaron Dessner, Bon Iver, William Bowery and Hack Antonoff.

“Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen … Surprise! … I wrote and recorded this music in isolation," Swift said via Twitter.

She described the album as containing songs that she “poured” all of her “whims, dreams, fears and musing” into.

Speaking about how she was inspired to release the album because of the “uncertainty” of the world, she says, “…the times we’re living in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My gut is telling me that if you make something you love, you should put it out into the world. That’s the side of uncertainty I can get on board with."

Swift will also premiere the music video for her song “cardigan” tonight, which she wrote and directed. The shoot was overseen by a medical inspector and she explained, “…everyone wore masks, stayed away from each other, and I even did my own hair, makeup, and styling.”
